
Listening to Bookends was like reuniting with an old friend I didn't know that I had: only after hearing the album start to finish did I recognize that these songs have been around me all along. "America" breezed right by me in Almost Famous, and I never quite understood why the song surrounding a particularly poignant scene in 500 Days Of Summer was called "Bookends."īut now, my narrow cinematic context of Simon & Garfunkel has been broadened. Robinson," I've never seen The Graduate in its entirety. From there, my knowledge of Simon & Garfunkel continued to be informed solely by incomplete pop culture encounters with the duo. As the album cover suggests, it surely takes an entire library to bookend the amount of talent possessed by this multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter.My musical relationship with Simon & Garfunkel began with an influence that any self-respecting, music-loving twenty-something would now be ashamed to admit: The Garden State soundtrack. The Bookends is yet another tour de force for Eric Gales, whose guitar playing is off the chain. Slade also returns on the hip hop laced bonus track “Pedal to the Metal,” that hints at a Thriller era Michael Jackson.

The album closes as it began, with the instrumental “Resolution” providing Gales another opportunity to showcase his formidable guitar technique. “Reaching for a Change” is another autobiographical masterpiece featuring multi-layered guitars undergirding the potent lyrics, “I’ve been waiting so long / Where did I go so wrong / Out of darkness, through the shame / Reaching out, reaching for change.” Beth Hart steps in on a cover of “With a Little Help from My Friends,” her Joplin-esque vocals a perfect foil for Gales’ heavy metal backdrop, while Dylan Wiggins’ organ inspires reverence. Gales then follows with his own solo, offering proof of his southpaw supremacy. This commentary on Gales’ status as an “upside-down, left-handed guitarist” features Doyle Bramhall II, who contributes an extensive guitar solo in the mid-section. The slow, bluesy “Southpaw Serenade” is another album highlight. Gales doubles down on the funk in the relationship song “Whatcha Gon’ Do” and adds xylophone riffs, beatboxing and slide guitar to the even funkier track “It Just Beez That Way,” while elements of R&B seep into the rock ballad “How Do I Get You.” Throughout the album there are many stylistic twists and turns.

He definitely taps into the current zeitgeist, as well as Slade’s gospel roots, with the lyrics, “I ain’t preaching, that’s not my thang / I just know we’ve got to make a change / there’s too much pressure in the kettle / something’s gotta give.” One of the highlights of the album, this track also exemplifies Gales’ songwriting and vocal skills. Slade (the singer formerly known as Tonéx). Following is the message song, “Something’s Gotta Give,” featuring B. Gales immediately captures attention on the instrumental intro, which provides a taste of the psychedelic shredding that often draws comparisons to Jimi Hendrix. While blues and rock may represent the bookends, the project also embodies “everything in between” from pop, jazz, and funk to gospel.

Gales’ new release, The Bookends, may be his greatest accomplishment to date. Along the way he’s recorded with many other artists, and also performs alongside bassist Dug Pinnick (King’s X) and drummer Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta) in the formidable black rock power trio Pinnick Gales Pridgen. A former child prodigy, Gales was signed to a record label at the age of 16 and has since recorded 15 solo albums.

Virtuoso blues-rock guitarist Eric Gales may not be a household name, but he’s been described by his peers as one of the best guitar players in the world.
